Doors & Windows

If you don’t work in the building or construction industry, then you’re probably unfamiliar with the methodology of window and door installation, and exactly how important a window, or door, is, in terms of a construction project.

In fact, when it comes to looking at what doors are in terms of building works, a professional builder will look at a door is from a different perspective to regular property owners.

Considering a door as part of a construction project

When looking at what a door is from a construction point of view, a door is part of a wall opening that provides practical access to the interior of a room. Doors connect all the rooms within the interior of a house, unless the property has an open space living plan.

There are five different types of doors that can be divided as follows by their method of construction:

Framed and panelled doors

Framed and panelled doors are generally strong doors that can be fitted to single or double leaf openings. Framed and panelled doors are used in various different buildings.

Glazed doors

Unlike framed and panelled doors, glazed doors featuring glass panelling so that the interior of the room is visible through the door.

Flush doors
There are two types of flush doors, these are: Solid core flush doors and hollow core flush doors.

  • Solid core flush doors
Solid core flush doors essentially have a core made of timber and are made up of a wooden frame of stiles and railings.
  • Hollow core flush doors
Hollow core doors have a core made up of equally spaced battens. Like solid core flush doors, hollow core flush doors feature stiles and rails for the frame.

Louvered doors

Louvered doors have the appearance of French style shutter and allow further ventilation into a room.

Wire gauged doors

Commonly used for store rooms and areas that aren’t often seen, wire gauged doors offer increased ventilation.

You’ll see wire gauged doors in pet kennels and hotel luggage rooms.

Types of windows in building construction

Similarly, to doors used in construction, there are different types of windows used in building construction.

These include: Sliding windows, double hung windows, pivoted windows, casement windows, sash windows, lantern windows, gable windows and skylights.
